승리(13) 주 안에서 진정한 변화  

대하 33: 1-16

 

코로나19 바이러스가 우리 삶에 직접적 영향을 주기 시작한지 6주가 되어 갑니다. 주부들은 남편 출근하고 아이들 학교 가면, 그나마 자유 시간도 있었습니다. 그런데 요즘 매끼 돌아오는 식사 준비로 제대로 내 시간 갖기 어렵습니다. 아빠들도 업무는 정상적으로 해야 하기에, 대화하는 것, 놀아주는 것 쉽지 않을 것입니다.

 

문제는 신앙생활에도 영향이 있다는 것입니다. 전에는 주일에 와서 찬양대도 하고, 성경 공부도 하고 나름대로 신앙을 지켜 왔습니다. 그런데 코로나 이후 오히려 더 시간 있어 성경 읽기와 말씀 묵상이 가능할 것 같았지만 그렇지 못한 분도 있다고 합니다. 그리고 몇 주는 했지만 그것도 잘 안 되는 분들도 있을 것입니다.

 

이유는 간단합니다. 바쁜 이유도 있지만, 내 삶이 전에도 그렇지 않았기에 그대로 관성에 따라 나타나는 것입니다. 신앙은 일 주일 단위로 이루어지는 것이 아닙니다. 매일 주 앞에서 해야 할 것이 지켜져야 합니다. 그리고 순간마다 주님과 동행하는 삶이 있어야 어떤 환경의 변화에도 늘 동일한 나의 모습이 나타나게 되어 있습니다.

 

사실 생활의 습관은 3 주 정도 ‘나를 부인하는 삶’을 살면 우리 몸은 옛 것을 잃고 새롭게 적응하게 됩니다. 언제 코로나가 종식되고 정상적인 일상으로 돌아갈지 그 누구도 예측이 불가능한 시점입니다. 그 시간이 얼마가 걸리든지, 오늘부터 내 신앙의 체질과 가정의 영적 분위기를 바꾸는 삶이 있기를 도전 드립니다.      

 

이렇게 말씀 드리면 이런 질문을 할 수 있습니다. 우리가 그렇게 변해야만 하는 이유가 뭐냐는 것이지요. 모든 것이 자연스럽게 시간이 지나면 원래대로 될 텐데 우리 신앙생활의 회복과 일상으로 돌아가는 것과는 무슨 연관이 있느냐는 것입니다. 오늘 그 이야기를 성도님들과 함께 나누고자 합니다.

 

1절을 보면 새로운 왕 므낫세가 등장합니다. 왕하 23:26절을 참조해 보면 그는 남유다의 왕들 가운데 가장 악한 왕으로 소개됩니다. 먼저 2절을 보면 하나님이 쫓아낸 이방인들의 가증한 것들조차 본받아 행했다고 합니다. ‘심했다, 엉망이다’ 라는 생각이 듭니다. 게다가 3절에는 아버지 히스기야가 부순 산당을 ‘다시’ 세웁니다.

 

바알 제단을 쌓고, 아세라 목상을 만들어(3절) 하나님의 전에 세웁니다(7절). 또한5절을 보면 성전에 일월성신을 위한 제단들을 쌓고 3절을 보면 ‘경배하며 섬겨’ 하나님을 모독합니다. 6절에서는 사랑하는 자신의 아들들을 인신제사로 드리고, 심지어 점술, 사술, 요술, 신접한 자, 박수들을 ‘신임’까지 했다고 합니다.

 

므낫세에게 별명을 붙인다면 ‘청개구리’ 적합할 것 같습니다. 9절에는 하나님 말씀으로 백성들을 바른 길로 인도해야 할 왕이 유다와 예루살렘 주민들을 꾀어 이방나라보다 더 악을 행하게 만듭니다. 마지막으로 10절을 보면 하나님의 경고의 말을 전하는 선지자를 보냈지만 당연히 무시했겠지요.

 

6절은 그에 대한 중간 점수입니다(반전 기대). 하나님이 싫어하는 ‘악을 많이 행하여 하나님을 진노케 만들었다’고 합니다. 하나님은 그런 므낫세에게 이스라엘 백성들을 징계할 때 사용하는 칼과 기근과 전염병 중에 11절에 의하면 이방의 칼에 의해 그가 포로가 되어 잡혀가게 만들었다고 말씀하고 있습니다.

 

그의 아버지 히스기야는 앗수르의 침입을 대비해서 국방을 튼튼히 해 둡니다. 그런데도 아들 므맛세는 지고 말았습니다. 자신의 왕의 자리는 물론 생명조차도 담보할 수 없는 위급한 상황이 되었습니다. 유다 백성들은 물론 앗수르 백성들 앞에서 쇠사슬에 묶여 가게 함으로 왕으로서의 권위를 완전히 상실시켜 버립니다.

 

12절은 그의 인생의 만난 한 시간을 ‘환난’ 이라는 단어를 사용하고 있습니다. 그는12살에 왕이 됩니다. 왕하 20:6절을 보면 히스기야가 병들어 죽게 되자 하나님께 기도하고 15년을 더 사는 복을 누립니다. 그러면 그때 태어난 아들이 므낫세입니다.

너무 사랑만 받다 보니 이런 망나니가 나왔는지는 알 수 없습니다.

 

아무튼 왕이 포로가 된 것은 개인의 위기를 넘어 총체적인 국가의 위기였습니다. 그런데 놀랍게도 회복이 일어납니다. 13절을 보면, 하나님은 므낫세를 돌아오게 만들고, 왕좌에 올라 권위를 회복하여 백성을 다시 다스리게 합니다. 나라도 백성도 다시 일상으로 돌아갑니다. 그런데 그의 삶은 완전히 달라집니다.

 

 2-7절에서 보여주었던 이전 삶과는 전혀 다른 모습이 전개됩니다. 14절에 성을 쌓고 국방을 든든히 합니다. 이방 신들과 여호와의 전에 두었던 우상들을 제거하고, 15절에는 모든 제단들을 헐어버립니다. 그리고 16절을 보면 여호와의 제단을 보수합니다. 그리고 백성들을 향해 권고가 아닌 ‘명령하여’ 하나님만 섬기게 하고 제사가 이루어지게 만듭니다(16절).

 

우리도 언젠가는 코로나19 바이러스 백신이 개발되고 치료약도 나와 감기처럼 취급 받는 날이 오면 일상도 완전히 회복될 것입니다. 일상으로의 회복, 중요하고 기쁘고 기대되지요. 그러나 오늘 말씀은 더 중요한 것이 있음을 말해 줍니다. 므낫세와 같이 우리 삶이 이전보다 더 선한 모습으로 변화가 일어나야 한다는 것입니다.

 

그에게 변화를 가져온 것은 12절에 의하면 기도와 하나님 앞에서 ‘크게 겸손함’이었습니다. 우리도 므낫세처럼 동일한 힘든 시간을 지나고 있습니다. 그렇다면 고난 가운데 그에게 있었던 하나님 앞에서의 진정한 겸손인 회개의 기도가 동일하게 우리에게도 있느냐를 성도님들은 철저히 점검해야 할 것입니다.

 

이쯤에서 좀더 세밀히 살필 것이 있습니다. 한 사람을 바꾸고 새 삶을 살게 하는데 고난과 역경이 중요한 역할을 하는 것 부정하지 않습니다. 12절에도 “그가 환난을 당하여 그의 하나님 여호와게 간구하고 그의 조상들의 하나님 앞에 크게 겸손”하였다고 말합니다. 고난은 사람을 변화시키기에 충분합니다.  

 

하나님은 안 변하는 사람을 환란 속에 집어 넣는 것을 11절은 암시합니다. 고난은 사람을 겸손하게 만들기 때문입니다. 그렇게 인간을 하나님이 만들었을 것입니다. 하지만 고난만이 사람을 바꾼다고는 말할 수 없습니다. 왜냐하면 고난 당한 사람들 모두 하나님께로 돌아오지는 않기 때문입니다.

 

그러므로 진짜 중요한 것은 13절입니다. ‘그제서야 하나님을 알게 되었다’는 표현입니다. 한 존재의 내면의 변화를 말해 줍니다. 물론 구약의 본문을 가지고 다 설명 할 수는 없습니다. 하지만 하나님(즉 예수그리스도) 안에서 일어난 내적 변화를 ‘거듭남’이라 합니다. 물론 복잡한 과정이 필요합니다. 그러나 먼저 고난은 나를 돌아 볼 수 있는 겸손의 자리에 서게 합니다.

 

그때 윤리와 도덕, 법의 가르침에서 어긋난 것을 깨닫는 것은 후회와 뉘우침입니다. 이것들도 변화를 가져 옵니다. 그러나 복음 안에서 나를 돌아 보면 내가 앞서고 뒤에 서 계신 하나님을 보게 됩니다. 그리고 뒤에 서 계신 하나님과 나 사이의 거리가 너무 멀어서 가까이 갈 수가 없다는 것을 알게 됩니다.

 

그러나 회개가 일어나면 날수록 내가 하나님께로 더 가까이 가고 있음을 느낍니다. 내 회개가 진정한 것인지 확인하는 방법이 있습니다. 그것은 반드시 예수 그리스도의 십자가를 도중에 만난다는 것입니다. 십자가 때문에 세상이 말하고 종교들이 가르치는 차원을 넘어 하나님이 ‘죄’라고 하는 것들을 전부 인정하는 일이 일어납니다.

 

그때 하나님께로부터 멀어진 거리만큼이 ‘내가 지은 죄’라는 것을 알고 좌절합니다.그러나 죄에 대한 심판과 사망 앞에 울고 있는 나에게 기쁜 소식 하나를 전합니다. 내 죄를 용서하기 위해 대신 십자가에서 죽으시고 살아난 예수를 믿는 사람에게 죄를 용서해 준다는 은혜가 있음을 알게 됩니다. 이것을 ‘의’라고 부릅니다.

 

죄인에서 의인이 되었다는 소리를 듣는 순간부터 우리의 삶은 완전히 변합니다. 말씀은 나의 밥이 되어 하루의 시작이 되고, 기도는 나의 영양제가 되고, 찬양이 하루의 오락이 되는 새로운 하나님과의 관계가 이루어집니다. 이 관계가 형성된 사람들은 주님의 모습을 닮아가는 삶이 시작됩니다. 세상은 그 삶을 보고 ‘예수 믿고 저 사람 변했다’고 하는 것입니다.

 

세상은 고난이 오면 이겨내는 것과 다시 정상으로 돌아가는 것에만 몰두 합니다. 그러나 성도는 달라야 합니다. 거룩을 상실하지 않고, 하나님이 기뻐하는, 고난이 있기 전과는 전혀 다른 일상을 꿈꾸어야 합니다. 그리고 그런 삶의 회복을 위해 주 안에서 진정한 변화가 먼저 내 속에서 그리고 세상에서 일어나도록 기도해야 합니다. 회복을 기다리는 시간에 이런 복된 성도가 되기를 주님의 이름으로 축복합니다.

 

Victory (13) Genuine Change in God                    

2 Chronicles 33:1-16

It has been 6 weeks since COVID-19 began to directly affect our lives. Stay-at-home mothers used to get a bit of free time once their husbands go to work and their children go to school. However, it is difficult for them to get free time nowadays, because they must spend time to prepare for every single meal. And since fathers must work as usual, it is also difficult for fathers to spend time with their family.

The problem is that COVID-19 also impacts our walk with God. Before, we used to be able to come worship at church and participate in Bible study on Sundays, keeping our faith in such ways. It seems like since Corona, we would have more time to read the Bible and meditate on His Word, but many say they have not been able to. And there may be people who were able to do so for a few weeks but have since then lost their motivation.

The reason for this is simple.There is the fact that we are busy, but it is mainly because our lives were not so God-centered even before. Faith is not something that can be refueled every week. It is something that must be kept before God every day. We must walk with God in every moment of our lives to see a steady us, even when surrounded by changing situations.

In honesty, it takes about three weeks for one to abandon old habits and to adopt new ones. It is difficult for us to know when Corona will disappear and let us return to our regular, daily lives. But however long it may take for us to return to our old lives, I encourage you to change and renew the way you and your family practice faith starting today.

You might question me like so: “Why must we change? Everything will naturally return to the way it has been after some time, so what does the renewing of our faith now and returning to our regular daily lives later have anything to do with each other?” This is what today’s message is about.

In Verse 1, King Manasseh is introduced. He is introduced as the evilest king among all Judean kings (refer to 2 Kings 23:26). If we look at Verse 2, we can see that Manasseh even followed the practices of peoples who God drove out before the Israelites. “Horrible,” “awful,” may be some words that come to our minds when we hear this. Furthermore, as seen in Verse 3, Manasseh rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had demolished beforehand.

Manasseh erected altars to the Baals and made Asherah poles (Verse 3), taking them into God’s temple after (Verse 7); he built altars to the starry hosts (Verse 5) and bowed down before them, worshipping them (Verse 3). Furthermore, according to Verse 6, Manasseh sacrificed his children and even practiced divination and witchcraft, seeking omens and consulting spiritists.

If we were to describe Manasseh, we would say that he was like a rebellious teen, refusing to listen to his parents. According to Verse 9, instead of righteously leading his people with God’s Word, Manasseh led his people astray to evil, more evil than were committed by the nations that God destroyed before them. Lastly, according to Verse 10, God spoke to Manasseh and his people, but of course, Manasseh ignored His warnings.

Verse 6 is a half-way checkpoint for Manasseh (expect a turnover). It says Manasseh “did much evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.” So, according to Verse 11, God brought the Assyrian army against Manasseh and took him into prisoner, which is also one of the ways God used to punish the Israelites before.

In preparation for an Assyrian attack, Manasseh’s father, Hezekiah, had tightened defense during his rule, but despite that effort, Manasseh still lost to the Assyrians. Manasseh found himself in a situation where not only his position as king, but also his life was put into danger. And by allowing Manasseh to be put into shackles and carried away by Assyrian soldiers, Judeans dismissed Manasseh’s powers and rights as king.

In Verse 12, the word “distress” is used to describe Manasseh’s condition as he sought God. Manasseh had become king at the age of 12. In 2 King 20:6, as Hezekiah approached death, he prayed to God and thus was blessed with 15 years more of life. And Manasseh was born to Hezekiah within those 15 years. We do not know if Manasseh had turned out to be like so because he only received love from a young age.

Nevertheless, becoming a prisoner to Assyria was not only a personal danger but also a national danger for Manasseh and Judah. But surprisingly, the situation was overturned. According to Verse 13, God allowed Manasseh to return to his throne and to rule his people once again. His land and his people all returned to their normal lives. However, Manasseh’s life became very different from before.

In contrast to Verse 2-7, further verses show that Manasseh lived a life drastically different from before after experiencing change in God.According to Verse 14, Manasseh built an outer wall, strengthening his defense. He got rid of the foreign gods and removed the image from God’s temple (Verse 15). He restored the altar and offered offerings, also encouraging Judah to only serve God (Verse 16).

We, as well, will see a day when we can return to our daily lives – after COVID-19 is handled with a vaccine, thus becoming commonly treated as a cold. A return to our daily lives seems important, joyful, and worthwhile. However, today’s message shows us that there is something even more important. Like Manasseh, our lives must change to become purer and more God-centered than before.

According to Verse 12, change was brought upon prayer and humbling before God. Like Manasseh, we are experiencing difficult times. Thus, through these difficult times, we must see for ourselves if we possess humble repentance and prayer, like Manasseh.

At this point, there is something that we must assess with careful detail. I am not dismissing the important role that distress and adversity has on leading one towards a new life. Verse 12 says, “In [Manasseh’s] distress he sought the favor of the Lord his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his ancestors.” Distress is enough to cause change in someone.

Through Verse 11, we can see that God can place stubborn people through trials. This is because hardship allows people to become humbled. God made humans like so. However, we cannot say that hardship alone changes people. Not all people who experience hardship find their way back to God.

Therefore, Verse 13 is the most important verse out of today’s message. It is the fact that “Manasseh knew that the Lord is God.” This shows us change within Manasseh. Of course, not everything can be explained with the Words of the Old Testament, but a person that experiences change within oneself, in the presence of God (the Lord, our Jesus), is thought to be “born again.” The process is not so easy, but hardship allows one to reflect upon oneself while standing at a place of humbleness.

And at that moment, one can see whatever strays from their morals and ethics, along with the teachings of the laws, through regret and repentance. This also brings change. If we look back at ourselves through the Word of God, we can find ourselves straying from God, who remains behind us. We find ourselves straying too far from God, too far to reach out and go near Him.

However, through repentance, we can experience ourselves drawing nearer to God. To know that our repentance is true and genuine, we must do so before the Cross of Jesus Christ. Because of the Cross, we can go beyond what the world and religions teach us and find true understanding of our sins before God.

At that moment, we realize that the distance we had from God is from the sins that we have committed. However, there is good news for those who are saddened by the trial and death that sin brings. In order to forgive us from our sins, Jesus Christ died on the Cross and resurrected before us, giving forgiveness to whoever believes in Him. We call this “righteousness.”

From the moment that we hear that we have transformed from sinners to righteous believers, we are able to build a new relationship with God, where the Word becomes our bread, prayer becomes our vitamins, and worship becomes our daily joy. People who have this relationship with God then can become more like God. The world looks at those people and says, “Jesus really changed that person.”

When the world experiences hardship, the only focus is put on how that hardship will be defeated and how everything will return to normal once again. But we, as believers, must be different. We must renew our faith and strive for a different life, one that God will be happy with. By the name of Jesus Christ, I pray that we will be able to become believers that pray for our own genuine change in the presence of God.
