Resurrection:
Faith in the Resurrection in the Midst of Tribulation
(막4:35-41; 살전 4:17; 계 7:9-10 Mk 4:35-41; 1Th 4:17; Rev 7:9-10)
We are
in the midst of the COVID-19 global pandemic. There are too many deaths per day
across the world, and also in New York where we live. From time to time, we
think, ‘Jesus, who overcame death, can't even defeat this mere virus?’ Some
might resent the fact that the COVID-19 crisis cannot be solved even if we
believe in His resurrection.
Let’s talk about the problems one by one. If you look at Mark 4:35, it starts with the daily
lives of Jesus and His disciples. Due to their busy schedule, by the time they
finished the ministry it was quite late in the evening when they started
heading to their destination for the next day. , on their way to the destination
on Lake Galilee, wind begins to blow ferociously. The disciples are accustomed
to storms, since they used to be fishermen.
However,
according to verse 37, the evening's wind was not a simple wind storm, but a
'big wind storm.' The situation is analogous for us today. We have endured SARS
and MERS well. This COVID-19 virus is also said to be the same type of virus.
However, although the fatality rate is low, it is a 'big wind storm' in terms
of incredibly fast transmission and propagation speed.
Even the disciples who used to be fishermen were fearful
of the ‘big wind storm.’The disciples rowed very hard to reach their destination. However, the ship
began to fill up with water due to strong winds. The disciples were all
shrouded in fear of dying. Surprising fact is that Jesus was not far away,
according to verse 38.
Jesus
was with His disciples at the scene where the disciples were trembling with
fear of death. Therefore, instead of thinking that He is far away, we must have
faith in Jesus that He is with us in the times of trouble. We are weathering
the storm called the Corona 19 pandemic with the Lord. Only with this faith can
we find the Lord.
In the middle of the storm, the disciples woke Jesus up. Like this, we must also cry out to the Lord to save
us in these difficult times. As much as we are in fear, we must look for God
who will rebuke the sea and calm the wind. We must not stop praying for this
storm to recede. According to verse 39, Jesus calmed the storm.
After
calming the storm, Jesus said, “Why are you afraid, do you still not have
faith?” In fact, we shouldn't be afraid of the COVID- 19 virus itself. Medical
staff, quarantine workers, and government officials are fighting in the
frontline. If everyone was only in fear of the virus, how can there be a
vaccine developer?
How can a cure be developed in the lab? The saints must thoroughly distance themselves from
hygiene and society in order to cherish the life God has given me and others.
But the virus itself shouldn't be a fear. Because the Lord has overcome death.
In
Corinthians 15:57, it is said that He gave us the victory through the
resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It means that the Lord, who has overcome
death, made us overcome the eternal judgment that comes after death. What we
should fear the most is not death itself. Rather, it is the judgement after
death that we should be afraid of.
Viral infection can lead to the state of death faster. It
is one of the many causes of death. So we should not just be afraid of viruses, but we should
think of ways to prevent them better. We don’t know which causes of death are
more likely to get us killed, but if we were to fear only, how can we drive? A
lot of people die from a car accident, and so could you.
We have
solved the problem of fear, but there is one more thing we need to make sure.
It's about the fact that the virus doesn't discriminate between those who
believe and those who don't. Whether a person is a believer or nonbeliever, the
virus can cause death. Here's a question. Why does God not protect the
believers?
Questions like this may arise, since church gatherings
are causing more problems nowadays in the COVID crisis. Just as death is fair to everyone, God does not
distinguish people even from a deadly virus. Because the need for salvation has
not emerged just from solving a real-life crisis, such as the pursuit of peace,
healing, and recovery from war, famine.
Salvation
began with a more fundamental reason: the original sin. There is salvation
because sin does not end with the death of all human beings. If salvation
merely means a resolution of the real-life problems, we have no reason to
cherish the post-death world, the concept of immortality, or eternity.
Then, there would be no reason for Jesus to come and bear
the cross. Also, there would be no need
to resurrect and gain victory. Because God has angels who serve Him. When we
are in difficulties, He can simply send an angel and rescue us each time. Then,
when we die, there is no reason for God to care. There would be only half Lord.
Does God
rule this world and Satan rule the world after death? What happens after the
death is more problematic, if we think about the fact that we will suffer from
Satan. However, God did not build nor rule this world like that. God is
always(from eternity to eternity), everywhere(in this world and in the next
world), as a sovereign ruler to anyone(to man, to angel, and even to Satan).
The meaning of resurrection is always with God, according
to Thessalonians 4:17. Also, Revelation 7:9-10 alludes that we shall always
be worshipers. During when we are worshiping, our pain disappears and only
peace exists. Have you ever felt fear, anxiety, or disappointment while
worshiping? I doubt you have.
Therefore,
the faith to resurrection will make us turn ourselves toward God and be a
worshiper rather than focusing on the pain of the present. So that all the fear
that reality creates is put under the cross. It will prepare you for the
judgement, which is more fundamental than death, and make you realize the grace
of salvation. Then, your resentment, if any, will disappear. I bless you in the
name of the Lord to overcome this crisis with the faith to resurrection.
